St Marys Masters at Aussie Stadium 2006

On Saturday, 4th November, the St Marys Masters sides played each other in a 7 a side game at Aussie Stadium. The game was part of the half time entertainment at the Australia v Great Britain Tri-Nations Test match. It was a big thrill for the players involved to play in front of 25,000 people.

The crowd certainly seemed to enjoy the entertainment provided by the older generation of football players ranging in age from:

  • Grade
  • Shorts
  • Name
  • 35-39
  • White
  • Stallions v Mustangs
  • 40-49
  • Black
  • Masters
  • 50-59
  • Red
  • Nifty Fifties
  • 60+ years young
  • Gold
  • Legends play with tags (cannot be tackled)

The game was an exhibition game to introduce the crowd to the increasingly popular Masters Rugby League, with Mick Hilton organising the players including father son Laurie & Grant Eldridge, Brad Anderson, Scott Macculloch, Gary Sullivan, Shaun Hinks, Peter Bowler, Jim Buckley, Paul Lee, Dave Curry, John Clift, John Collier, Greg Bond, John Lake, Mick Russell & John Wilkinson.

The Masters competition has increased from 8 sides in 2005 to more than 30 sides expected to turn out in 2007 in Sydney. The season culminates in a tournament at season end, this year it was the Gold Coast and in 2007 it will be Christchurch New Zealand followed by St Marys in 2008. So next season get along to see these gladiators or join up and participate in some good quality footy and socialising, check with your local junior league club for more information.
